Eye injury

Posted on February 25, 2009 at 12:18 PM

This weekend I went ice climbing in Rjukan with Martin Ploug and we did Juvsøyla once again, simply because it is such good alpine training. The next day we did four multipitch WI5 routes to get some mileage on ice. This was a very good and efficient day of climbing, but unfortunately I broke off a large chunk of ice on the last pitch of the day and caught it right in the eye, scratching the cornea pretty badly. It didn’t feel that bad so I went to work on Monday, but the next day it got red and swollen during the day, so today it went to see an ophthalmologist. He told me that it was very serious and that I could have lost my sight if I hadn’t seen him within a week. So now I have to take Cortisone and some other eye droplets ten times a day until it has healed. So I guess the morale is that you should wear some kind of glasses or at least close your eyes on impact with the ice, because eye injuries are pretty bad. I’m just glad that I learned this lesson within reach of a hospital and not far away on some  expedition. Anyway the eye should be okay for my upcoming trip to Nepal.
Here are a few photos from this weekend:
